Don't Do It Dave! Hiding Cords

Having trouble viewing the video? Click here to download it.

So, you want to cover up those unsightly electrical cords? Don't do it! Putting cords under rugs or furniture is a safety hazard. Cords could become crushed or frayed and you wouldn't be able to see the damage. Instead, keep all electrical cords safely in sight and protected by appropriate covers.

Here are more tips for safely using extension cords:

  • Use extension cords on a temporary basis only. If necessary, add extra outlets or place electrical devices closer to an outlet.
  • Replace any worn or frayed extension cords and inspect them before use.
  • Don't overload extension cords by using them to plug in appliances that draw more watts than the cord rating.
  • Use only extension cords with three-prong plugs for devices with three-prong plugs.
  • Never use nails or staples to attach a cord to a baseboard or other surfaces.
