Dig Safely – Contact MISS DIG 811

811Contacting MISS DIG 811 before digging should be at the top of any ‘to do’ list. Homeowners, contractors and others get free staking of underground utility lines that helps reduce the chance of injury and expense.

Make a staking request at elocate.missdig811.org. The service is both free and required under Michigan law.

Natural gas, electric, sewer, water, cable, fiber optic and other service lines are buried underground and out of sight. And each year, hundreds of dig-in accidents are caused by careless digging which result in damage to utility lines, service interruptions, property damage, financial penalties and personal injuries. These projects can be as small as planting trees, installing a street mailbox post or basketball hoop and building a deck.

Know what’s below and contact MISS DIG 811 before you dig. Once a request is received, MISS DIG 811 contacts local utility companies according to the location where someone plans to dig.

Utilities will send representatives to mark the approximate location of underground lines with paint and/or staking flags within three working days.  VIDEO: Don’t Ignore – Call 811.

4 Safe Digging tips for homeowners:

  1. Call at least three working days before beginning to dig to have underground lines marked.
  2. Avoid starting projects until you’re sure all lines are marked. Confirm that all lines have been marked by contacting MISS DIG 811.
  3. Avoid digging near marks. Before using power equipment within 4 feet of marked lines, hand dig to expose the pipe. If you have difficulty finding the pipe within 18 inches of marks, contact MISS DIG 811
  4. If a contractor has been hired, confirm that MISS DIG 811 has been contacted. Don’t allow work to begin if the lines aren’t marked.
