VIDEO: Compressed Air Tune Up or Overhaul?

Does your compressed air system need a tune up or a complete overhaul? And, what makes a good compressed air audit? We asked compressed air expert, John Skelton of Air Power USA, to help us answer these questions.

"When we perform a compressed air audit, we divide our effort into two parts: tune-ups and long-term projects."

"Tune ups basically state the case, what do I need to do to keep my existing system working properly?"

"Whereas long-term projects cover the types of equipment and capital investment needed to sustain the system over time on an efficient basis."

"Companies will come to us thinking they need a new compressor. However, if they just work within their existing system to make it run better both from a supply side standpoint and reduce air demand, they end up not needing the new compressor after all."

"There are simple, relatively easy fixes that can have a major impact on the overall effectiveness of a compressed air system."

"For every five audits we do, typically only one involves installing a new compressor. In three of five audits, the customer comes to us with the idea that they'll be purchasing new units. Through careful analysis and practical improvement measures, they're often able to avoid making those investments."

See Compressed Air Systems from the U.S. Department of Energy for more tips and resources for saving energy and improving system performance.
